Bias vs Opinion: My Bias or Opinion?

According to dictionary.com, bias is “a particular tendency or inclination, esp. one that prevents unprejudiced consideration of a question; prejudice.”

From the same source, an opinion is “a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty or a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.”

This, in my opinion (or should I say bias?) is a definition at a macro level. I would like to opine (or be biased) more towards saying that any sort of opinion is but a bias towards the consideration of a question. It boils down to saying, an opinion too, stems out of inclination.

As in definition, bias is a tendency or a prejudiced inclination, and an inclination is a belief or judgment, but one that rests on grounds insufficient. If, the grounds for forming an opinion are insufficient, then how is that opinion formed?

The answer to this is simple: it is formed due a biased viewpoint that we may have towards that particular judgment of the mind which itself may have crept in unknowingly.

An example here might clarify. Suppose I have had been eating chocolate ice cream (C) from a reputed parlor ‘A’ in the city. Also, I have had a fair number of trials of Vanilla Ice cream (V) from the same parlor ‘A’. So, since I have complete knowledge (or hence I would assume that I have) of both the taste of C and V from vendor A, it is my opinion, if I prefer either type of ice cream to the other. Let us say I prefer C to V.

Now, I move to another city, which has a different vendor ‘B’. I went there and started going there again and again. I tasted both V and C there. I agreed to the point, that V was definitely better than that of “A”, but it is a natural tendency, that I still stick to C due to the tendency that I have developed for C when I used to go to ‘A’. This is bias. But this bias, is usually called an opinion, because again, I did give a fair chance to both the ice creams at the new vendor ‘B’, and in fact acknowledged that V at ‘B’ was better than ‘V’ at ‘A’, but still, the paramount question remains, if and how will I be able to know that ‘V’ at ‘B’ is so good, that it is indeed better than ‘C’ too? In my opinion(bias), this is not really possible, since I have had an opinion formed earlier, that ‘C’ is better than ‘V’, and I do carry it inherently, everywhere.

I opine that this same logic applies to most of the things. The biased nature transmitted from generation to generation has led one to believe one’s bias as opinions.

Or is this my bias really? I may never know…

Saraswati to Laxmi!

Image Courtesy: http://www.thehindu.com/ Now that MBA is over and I am considered an ounce wiser, being back home means work. There are so many pending things that are just waiting in the attic to be dusted and made to work again. One of them is the mammoth task of physical share transfer and dematerialization. Though stated in one pretty sentence, it takes months of effort and work. And of course, money!  My brother has been painfully going about the motions of this work for a couple of months now and nothing much yet seems to have resulted out of it. We struck a good deal with a certain Saraswati something shares. I asked, "How much would this one fetch us?". He replied, "Enough to recover the money you spent on your MBA degree". I exclaimed, "Really! Waoh! Even after they have been dormant for like 15 years??!". He quipped, in exasperation, "Weren't they supposed to teach you all this in B-School?" I did shut up and let him do this pain...

Delhi IndiBlogger Meet

It was a great idea to head for the Delhi IndiBlogger Meet. Finally, after many weekends spent just like that, a Saturday when I ventured out. The meet was scheduled at The Religare Art Gallery at the K.G. Marg in Connaught Place. Apart from having met some great bloggers (hopefully, will get to receive some pics and comments back here!), it was great to win some rocking treats from www.mydala.com  (I thought it wouldn't be fair if I enjoy the treats and not mention the sponsors!) Here is a pic of what was in the goody bag, entirely to evoke some envy! Connaught Place never fails to bring that 'Ah, I love this about Delhi!' feeling. Same old buildings though shiny now with restoration, great shops, winter days with amazing thelas selling everything from groundnuts to the piping hot tea - Ah, I love Delhi! Connaught Place is truly a 'Why Not Place?!' as the Religare Art Gallery would say...

Death by Chocolate!

"You can't finish it! No ways..." "Really, even with an empty stomach?" "Even with an empty stomach..." "And what exactly is it?" "Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate" That is how everyone I know who is currently in Bangalore talked about the ever so famous Death by Chocolate. I had to find the famous "The Corner House" and have this delicacy. I did, in Koramangala . Ordered one. Rs. 115. Wasn't it a bit too much for an Ice-cream? As it turned out, it wasn't. As I looked around and gathered all the yummy types of ice creams available on menu - in front of me landed a big plastic cup on a tray. See for yourself above. It was an eclectic mix of 2 huge scoops of vanilla ice cream, lots of brownie crumbs dipped in chocolate which was then again poured over by 4 teaspoons of steaming hot chocolate syrup [directly boiling in front of you on an electric plate]. If that wasn't enough, peanuts sprinkled and cherry ...
